Maelstrom:
Franz Marc, German Expressionism and Modernism in Georgia
By Ketevan Kintsurashvili & David Janiashvili
About the Book
The book represents the exhibition held in 2015 at D. Shevardnadze Georgian National Gallery in Tbilsi. The exhibition “Maelstrom: Franz Marc, German Expressionism and Modernism in Georgia” was conceived as a multidisciplinary research within the exhibition environment. As a basis for the idea of exhibition a small-size book published in Tiflisi (Tbilisi) in 1926 was taken, representing a collection of Georgian Symbolist-Expressionist writer Grigol Robakidze’s early dramas. A basis for the cover design of the book is Franz Marc’s famous canvas “Tiger” (1912). The works created by W.Kandinsky, I.Gamrekeli, K.Zdanevich, L.Gudiashvili, D.Kakabadze, B.Gordeziani, P.Otskheli, and E.Akhvlediani presented at the exhibition tell us about the united strong wave of theater and cinema, literature and art created by the epoch of Modernism. (Author of idea and curator: Ketevan Kintsurashvili, designer of the exhibition: David Janiashvili, video installation: Gio Janiashvili).
